Raccoon is cut free after getting tangled in basketball net at a Los Angeles home

This is the moment a panicking young raccoon became trapped in the net of a basketball hoop.

LA Animal Services workers, Armando Navarrete and Ernesto Poblano, were called to a home in south Los Angeles, California.

When they arrived at the property they found the raccoon stuck high in a basketball hoop with its paws tangled up in the net.

The video, shot by Mr Navarrete, shows the baby raccoon getting more and more entangled in the net and nervously lashing out at its rescuers.

Its mother can be seen climbing out from the basement window of the home and up on to a nearby rooftop, carefully watching her young.

After the men set up their step ladders and one of the workers uses a catching hoop around the raccoon to keep it still.

The other worker covers the animal in a towel and uses cutters to free it from the ropes.

Moments later one of the workers carries the raccoon down to the ground and  releases it.

The young animal runs away through the grass looking for his mother hiding behind the fence.

The mother and her offspring then scurry away and hide under a stack of chairs.

Mr Navarrete said: ‘We believe the young raccoon was entangled in the netting since early morning, possibly from the night of the Fourth of July.

‘When the mother raccoon first came out from under the dwelling, we were shocked.

He said: ‘We thought she was going to attack us, but then it was clear she was only concerned about her young.

‘When she made her way up the fence to the rooftop of the garage, we thought now she’s going to attack, but again she was just nervous for her baby.

After freeing the young Mr Navarrete said: ‘[The mother] did look at us and growled and then they both took off.’
