Frank Lampard has revealed that several of his Chelsea stars are doubts to start their tough opening game of the season with Manchester United.
N’Golo Kante, Willian and Antonio Rudiger all trained on Friday afternoon but Lampard is unsure whether they are fit enough to be named in the starting XI.
Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford could be a baptism of fire for the new Chelsea boss and he may be without a number of key men as he goes toe-to-toe with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
‘Kante is fit. Is he match fit? It’s a question I’ll have to decide right up to the game,’ explained Lampard.
‘Possibly Rudiger and Willian the same. They’ve been training but it might be too soon. That’s one for me to gauge right up until Sunday.’
The Blues boss also revealed that winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is training following an achilles tendon injury.
England international Hudson-Odoi has entered the final 12 months of his contract and, while Lampard wants the 18-year-old to stay in west London, he says there has been no progress on a potential new deal.
‘No, on Callum there’s not. The clubs are talking. We want him to stay, I want him to stay. We hope Callum stays, simple as that,’ replied Lampard when asked if there was an update on Hudson-Odoi.
‘The better news is that he’s working hard on his fitness and is back out on the pitch, so from my point of view right now that’s the really good news and, of course, as a club we’d like that to be longer term.’
Ross Barkley, Christian Pulisic and Pedro all shone in pre-season and are expected to make Lampard’s starting XI against United.
