MPs were bracing themselves for a general election last night after a Tory MP appeared to confirm secret plans for one this year.
Damian Hinds accidentally shared a screenshot of an email called “GE2019 team thoughts” on Instagram. “GE” is a common abbreviation for general election.
The ex-Education Secretary’s post came hours after ministers insisted no election was planned.
PM Boris Johnson sparked speculation an election looms with a flurry of policy announcements.
A Labour source said: “All this does is confirm the worst-kept secret in the Palace of Westminster.”
Mr Hinds deleted the post, claiming “nothing to see here”.
