Liverpool news: Barcelona target Matthijs de Ligt gives Reds transfer hope with Ajax claim

LIVERPOOL have been boosted after Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt’s insistence that no transfer agreement has been made with Barcelona.

The Spanish champions were thought to be closing in on the 19-year-old, with the Dutchman reportedly keen on joining team-mate Frenkie de Jong at the Nou Camp.

However, Liverpool are believed to have entered the race after claims De Ligt is still considering his options.

De Ligt’s season is now over after Ajax secured the Eredivisie title on Wednesday night, handing them the Dutch league and Cup double.

And, talking after the game, he spoke out about his future amid claims that he could have played his final game for the Amsterdam side.

“Has it been my last game for the club? I do not know yet,” De Ligt is quoted as saying.

“There are conversations, but there is still no agreement.

“With who? The newspapers write, so choose one yourself.”

Earlier reports had suggested that while Barcelona is De Ligt’s preferred destination, he is worried that he may not be handed much playing time with the Spanish champions to being with.

Barcelona already have an excellent centre-back department, with Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique on the books at the club.

De Ligt is believed to also have offers from Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, but could Liverpool intervene?

The Reds narrowly missed out on winning the Premier League title this season to Manchester City and are looking to improve the squad.

Defensive reinforcements though would not seem to be high on Jurgen Klopp’s wish list after the team conceded only 22 goals in the league all season.

And with Joe Gomez back from injury to partner Virgil van Dijk, hunting De Ligt would not seem to be the number one target.

But with a player of his quality potentially available, Klopp may feel that he is worth forking out for.

Add into the equation De Ligt’s familiarity with Holland international team-mates Van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum, a move to Anfield may not be out of the question.

De Ligt is likely to cost somebody around £60m.
