Last year’s series runner-up Julian Wilson is one of just two Australians to win their opening heats at the World Surf League event in Bali.
Wilson topped his all-Australian showdown on Monday at Keramas’s black sand beach while Mikey Wright won the second-last of the 12 heats as both advanced straight to the third round.
Queenslander Wilson tallied 10.90 points to overcome Jack Freestone and Adrian Buchan.
Wright scored 12.00 to defeat Joan Duru and Kanoa Igarashi.
The 22 year-old Wright’s older brother Owen and Wade Carmichael were second in their three-man match-ups and that was good enough to earn them a spot in the round of 32, along with Freestone.
World champion Gabriel Medina, second in his heat, will join heat winners Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Jordy Smith, Italo Ferreira and Filipe Toledo when the third-round action begins.
The top two surfers from each heat in round one progressed to round three while a number of Aussies, including Buchan and Soli Bailey, were relegated to round two.
All heats after round one are sudden death.
