Celtic eye Crimson Star Belgrade defender as various to £5m Chelsea star

CELTIC are reportedly eyeing a move for Red Star Belgrade defender Srdjan Babic as an alternative to Chelsea’s Tomas Kalas.

The Bhoys could be set for a defensive makeover this summer with Dedryck Boyata out of contract, while loanee Filip Benkovic is set to return to Leicester.

Celtic’s future is uncertain following Brendan Rodgers’ decision to quit for the Foxes last month.

Neil Lennon is in charge until the end of the season but reports suggest Celtic chiefs are working hard to prepare transfer targets ahead of next season.

Kalas is currently on loan at Bristol City but the Scottish Sun suggest Celtic are keen on securing a £5m deal.

“Reports in Turkey claim the Scottish champions are keeping tabs on Babic.”

City are keen to keep hold of the 25-year-old meaning Celtic could miss out, particularly if Lee Johnson’s side secure promotion to the Premier League.

And reports in Turkey claim the Scottish champions are keeping tabs on Babic.

According to CNN Turk, Celtic have sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action.

But they face competition from a number of European suitors, including Besiktas, Feyenoord and Nice.

Another defender with an uncertain future at Celtic Park is Marvin Compper.

The German has appeared just once since joining from RB Leipzig in 2017.

But he’s impressed for the reserves recently and he grabbed a goal and an assist in today’s 3-2 win over Hearts.

And Lennon hasn’t ruled out giving Compper some playing time in the coming weeks.

“He could, yeah,” he said last week when asked if the 33-year-old could be given an opportunity in the first team.

“He played a development game on Tuesday and I went to see it.

“His attitude was excellent. Scott Allan played as well, and [Vakoun Issouf] Bayo.

“I was really pleased with what I saw from the senior boys as well as the younger players.

“At the minute, with the squad being stretched with injuries, it’s good to have bodies and those guys are getting a little bit of match fitness.

“He’s training with the first-team squad and he’s keeping himself ticking over with match fitness with the development team.

“If called upon he’ll be ready, fitness-wise anyway.”
