A dog died of heatstroke after it was tethered using heavy chains in intense heat. The canine was found dead in a property in Brisbane, Australia, on Monday.
Officials of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), an animal welfare organization, reached the property Monday and found two dogs bound with heavy chains in the backyard. While one of the dogs had already died, the other was dehydrated. The dogs had no water to drink. The dehydrated dog was seized from its owner.
In a separate incident Monday, the officials seized a dog that was tied to a beam with its mouth taped shut at a home in Marsden. Though a bowl of water was seen near the dog, there was no chance for it to drink it as its mouth was taped.
Both the incidents were being investigated and that the owners could be prosecuted.
Speaking about both the incidents, Michael Beatty, from RSPCA Queensland, said, “Words fail us. Despite the warnings and despite the help of the media to relay the warnings, some people still aren’t listening,” the Courier Mail reported.
Describing the mistreatment of dogs as “unbelievable stupidity and callous indifference as temperatures skyrocket,” he said, “A dog can survive for days without food, but in these temperatures, if they don’t have shade or can’t reach water they’ll die.”
“We would also recommend that there are at least two to three containers of water in case one gets knocked over,” he added.
Speaking about the dogs being left in hot cars, Beatty said, “If it’s thirty degrees outside, the temperature inside a car can potentially rise to well over forty degrees in less than five minutes.” He added that despite several warnings the RSPCA received several reports of dogs locked in hot cars.
In an incident related to hot car deaths, a dog died while trying to escape from a hot in Australia in December 2018. The dog was choked to death while it tried escaping from the car by jumping out of it. The canine was found hanging from its collar which was attached to the seatbelt.
“Left their dogs and a cat in the car and one of the dogs jumped out of the window and hung itself. For those asking, the dog was already dead when I found it hanging, choker collar attached to the seatbelt, window down low enough for it to jump out,” a witness posted on Facebook.
